Days Like These

days like these
a touch of autumn with the smell of weeds in the air
days like these
september used to fill me with despair
i’ve been beaten down by summer
now there’s something in the air
makes me sit up a little taller in my chair

days like these
you’d think that they might happen all the time
days like these
but they’re rare enough to trigger something in my mind
the leaves on the trees are looking more than a little tired
you can start to see them glow with a distant fire

days like these remind us that nothing ever lasts
all the finer things in my life are over way to fast
but everything’s a circle, you come areound and then
days like these will return to us again

days like these
the clouds still look like summer clouds
days like these
as blackbirds start to form their flying crowds
and rain is getting colder and the sun is going down
every night a little sooner
in shades of gray and brown
